New Approach to Funding for Places of Worship

Posted on Tuesday 4 April 2017
On 4 April 2017 the Diocese of Ely received notice from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) that its Grants for Places of Worship (GPOW) programme is closing.

The final application deadline for GPOW (England) is 14 August 2017. After this date, no further applications will be accepted.

The briefing note prepared by the HLF explaining the background to this decision and advice for those seeking grants can be downloaded via the link below.

We have been assured by the HLF that they will continue to support places of worship after 14 August, with applicants being directed to apply under their open programmes, primarily ‘Our Heritage’ (grants of up to £100k) and ‘Heritage Grants’ (grants of over £100k).

In due course a new Resources section, specifically for Places of Worship applicants, will be added to the HLF website. This will contain project examples and other guidance.

If you have any specific and immediate concerns about current or pending applications, please contact the HLF directly.

For more general questions about this and other sources of grant funding, please feel free to contact the Church Buildings Department at the Diocese where Sue Dickinson will be glad to assist you in the first instance. You can email on or telephone 01353 652729.
