Crossing the Threshold - Launch of the updated and expanded toolkit

Posted on Tuesday 14 November 2017
The Diocese of Hereford and the Historic Building Alliance have launched a new, updated and extended version of the "Crossing the Threshold: a step-by-step guide to developing your place of worship for wider community use and managing a successful building" project toolkit.

Its development is in response to a growth in church communities wanting to adapt and improve their space so that it can be opened up to other community groups

The toolkit offers step-by-step guidance for parishes beginning to consider making changes to their buildings and who have a vision of opening up their church buildings for wider community use. It sets out a process to ensure that the historic and liturgical requirements of a place of worship are balanced with community use.

The toolkit includes guidance on a wide range of different subjects, from discerning a church’s vision, to consulting with its local community, to raising the money, to achieving a physical project in the church building.  Based very much on practical experience in the rural churches of Hereford, this toolkit is now endorsed as national guidance by Churchcare.
