During 2016, a review was started by the Church of England's National Safeguarding Team of all dioceses in relation to the 2009 Past Cases Review (PCR) and its continuing legacy.
The Ely Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser (DSA) completed a screening questionnaire and interview in 2016 and answered further information requests towards the end of 2017.
On the basis of the information reviewed by the DSA, the Diocesan Safeguarding Team concluded that the 2009 PCR should be repeated, the Diocese of Ely subsequently welcomed the recommendation and guidance of the Independent Scrutiny Team to undertake a new review.
The Diocese of Ely has now recruited four Independent File Reviewers who will begin Phase 1 of the Review in September 2018. They will review all personnel files held regarding Licenced Clergy, Lay Parish Staff and Volunteers and employees of the Ely Diocesan Board of Finance.
All files identified as requiring additional consideration following Phase 1 will be further reviewed by the Social Care Institute for Excellence, starting in November 2018. In addition, the Social Care Institute for Excellence will also review all safeguarding case records held in the Diocese of Ely.
As this process continues and where it is appropriate, the Diocese will continue to provide updates on the progress being made.
