Month of accompanied prayer

Cambs Prayer Team are a small team of Ely diocese spiritual directors, who organise an interdenominational quiet morning and Month of Accompanied Prayer each year, sometimes more than one.

Quiet mornings are usually held in local church centres and involve some guided prayer or reflection, led by some of the team, and extended periods of quiet to allow time for participants to pray individually. Materials to support individual prayer are provided. The mornings usually have a theme on which to focus, often related to the liturgical year or a scriptural theme.

A Month of Accompanied Prayer involves signing up to meeting a prayer companion from the team once a week for about half an hour. Your prayer companion will listen to what you would like to bring to the meeting and will travel with you as you reflect on your relationship with God, God’s presence in your life, and perhaps explore and listen to God’s promptings in your life. Together with your prayer companion you will consider what it might be fruitful for you to do in the coming week. For some, that might mean exploring prayer and maybe looking at different ways of praying. Others might want to focus on becoming more aware of where God is in the everyday happenings of life. In every meeting we are conscious that God is ‘The Guide’ but your prayer companion is there to help you to listen to God and come closer to God.

Opening and Follow up sessions The Month usually starts with an opening session for all participants who can attend and there is a follow up session after the Month is over. Group and individual meetings can be in person or via zoom. If you are considering engaging in spiritual direction, taking part in a Month of Accompanied Prayer can be a useful way to be introduced to it.

Involvement is free of charge, though donations are welcome if there are expenses arising from venue hire or resources. Months of prayer are often held at Brookside in Cambridge but occasionally in other venues eg Sawston churches.
