In response to concerns recently raised, the Diocese of Ely has undertaken an initial Review and, as a result, the Bishop has decided to suspend Alan Sherfield from the role of churchwarden at Wiggenhall St. Mary Magdalene, with immediate effect.
The suspension is under section 6A of the Churchwardens Measure 2001 (as amended by the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 and the Safeguarding (Code of Practice) Measure 2021). The suspension is deemed necessary as an interim measure to facilitate a full investigation. Meanwhile, parish church matters will continue to be overseen by the Parochial Church Council, with support and guidance from the Rural Dean of Wisbech Lynn Marshland.
There will be no further comment on this matter until the investigation is concluded.
