Archdeacon of Cambridge

Archdeacons, as the senior Bishop's Officers, have responsibility for the care of the clergy and church communities within their Archdeaconry.

The Cambridge Archdeaconry encompasses the deaneries of; Bourn, Cambridge North, Cambridge South, Fordham and Quy, Granta, North Stowe and Shingay.

Announcement from the Ven Dr Alex Hughes

It was announced on 8 May 2026 that the Ven Dr Alex Hughes, Archdeacon of Cambridge has been appointed as the next Bishop of Brixworth in the Diocese of Peterborough. We wish Alex all the very best indeed and give thanks for all he has given to our church communities in the Diocese of Ely over these past 12 years.

Alex Hughes has served as Archdeacon of Cambridge since 2014

As archdeacon, Alex has responsibility for the care and support of the church communities in the south of Ely Diocese.

Alex was born in Honiara, capital of the Solomon Islands, though he grew up on the south coast of England. He is married to Sarah, a psychodynamic counsellor/psychotherapist, and they have two sons. His hobbies include riding his Triumph Bonneville motorcycle and running half-marathons.

Alex was ordained in Oxford in 2000. He served his curacy at Headington Quarry, before moving to Portsmouth diocese as Bishop's Chaplain. From 2008 he was parish priest of St Luke’s and St Peter’s in inner-city Portsmouth before coming to the Diocese of Ely.
